Discover a Summer of History at Ludlow Castle

August is always one of the busiest months at Ludlow Castle. As schools break up and visitors arrive in the town, the Castle takes on a different atmosphere, with its ancient walls providing the backdrop to a month of medieval entertainment, historical experiences and hands-on activities.

Running throughout August, the Summer of History brings together a varied programme of events that invite visitors to experience Ludlow Castle’s history in different ways. Whether you’re planning a family day out, entertaining visiting friends and relatives or simply looking for a reason to return, there’s something happening throughout the month.

The programme begins with the Heraldry Trail, available every day throughout August. As visitors explore the Castle grounds, they’ll uncover the meaning behind medieval coats of arms and discover how colours, symbols and animals were once used to identify knights and noble families. It’s a chance to learn more about the Castle’s history while enjoying everything the site has to offer.

Summer of History gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the Castle in different ways, enjoy a great day out and discover something they didn’t know before.”

Every Tuesday throughout August – Tuesdays 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th August – the Jester from Chester returns with a lively mix of storytelling, medieval games and audience participation.

Birds of prey take centre stage on Thursdays 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th August, when Falconry Thursdays return to the Castle. Visitors can watch flying demonstrations while learning more about a tradition closely associated with castles and medieval society.

The middle of the month sees the arrival of Knights & Castles on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August. Delivered by History Adventures, the weekend gives visitors the opportunity to meet a knight in full armour, discover medieval weapons and equipment and get involved in a range of interactive activities inspired by castle life.

The finale comes over the August Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday 29th–Monday 31st August), when the Beaufort Companye transforms the Outer Bailey into a bustling medieval encampment. Craftspeople, soldiers and historical interpreters recreate everyday medieval life, while combat demonstrations, Wars of the Roses in 30 Minutes and Have-a-Go Archery provide plenty to see and do across the three days.

Away from the events, August is also a wonderful time simply to enjoy the Castle itself. Climb the towers for views across the Shropshire countryside, wander through the Great Hall and ancient ruins or spend time exploring the grounds at your own pace. Afterwards, visitors can stop at Chapter 66 for lunch, coffee or homemade cake before browsing the Castle gift shop, which stocks books, locally inspired gifts, children’s toys and souvenirs.

Sitting at the heart of Ludlow, the Castle is only a few minutes’ walk from the town’s independent shops, cafés and restaurants, making it easy to spend a full day exploring one of Shropshire’s best-loved destinations.
