Music with Purpose: Inspiring Young Musicians Across South Powys

At South Powys Youth Music, we believe music changes lives by building confidence, empathy, creativity, and a vital sense of belonging. Our mission is to provide music tuition with a purpose: a pyramid of opportunities offering inspiration and motivation through learning and performing together.

We serve young people aged 0 to 18. As a small charity, we work hard to sustain these creative opportunities for local youngsters. In a world of screen time and social pressures, music-making provides a valuable remedy. We cultivate an upbeat, uplifting atmosphere, striving for high standards while ensuring it is lots of fun. To achieve this balance, our experienced and qualified teachers bring expertise and warmth to every session.

We begin on Friday mornings at Kensington Baptist Church in Brecon with Shake, Rattle and Roll (ages 0-4). Led by the wonderful Kath and Alan, these relaxed sessions introduce families to the magic of music. Through play, movement, and everything from dinosaurs to drums, children develop foundational musicianship skills. As one parent shared: “South Powys is incredibly fortunate to have this magical experience. Children enter to spellbinding live cello playing, then journey through puppetry, songs and interactive instruments. Beautifully delivered, inspiring connection and creativity while offering a wonderful first exposure to music. No baby group compares.”

Our recent Music Explorers programme brought live world-music workshops directly into primary classrooms. By sparking a passion for music during those crucial early years for children in Years 1 and 2, we hope this initiative forms a vital bridge toward expanding our provision.

For children aged 7+, our Wednesday evening sessions provide opportunities to learn, perform and grow. Young musicians can take lessons and join ensembles, including Junior Choir, Nova Singers (year 6+), Strings, Wind, Percussion, and Brass. These groups offer a route from complete beginner through to advanced performer.

For our youngsters, the SPYM community becomes just as important as the music itself. From our base at Brecon High School, we build supportive links with schools and community groups, creating a shared space where children don’t just learn notes—they develop vital, transferable life skills. Collaborating in groups builds teamwork, focus, and resilience, while our regular Open Mic sessions at The Muse offer a low-pressure environment to build real confidence. Over the past year, more than 100 local children have come together to share the excitement of performance, learning to communicate creatively, while our Student Ambassadors serve as inspiring role models. An ensemble parent noted: “We are so pleased that our children have become involved with SPYM. They have had some fantastic opportunities to develop their skills as well as making many new friends. The tutors are all so supportive and the children are progressing so much – it’s wonderful to hear them perform!”

We believe in providing opportunities for every child, regardless of background, ability to play, or pay. Our main sessions for 7–18 year olds run on Wednesday evenings from 4.30–6.15pm at Brecon High School with dedicated buses from Hay-on-Wye and Crickhowell. We keep fees subsidised to make things more affordable, working closely with families who need extra financial help so that no child misses out.

By connecting our young musicians with events like the Brecon Baroque Festival, or world-renowned ensembles like the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, we bridge the gap between our rural location and the wider world. None of this happens in isolation. It requires a dedicated ecosystem of professional tutors, supportive families, our amazing young people, and local volunteers.
